Monitoring of COVID-19 in sewage water in Kenya using Udetect

11th June 2021

At the beginning of 2020, special interest was paid to monitoring COVID-19 virus particles in wastewater plants as a complementary tool to track the virus circulation in the population. Orvion Udetect® COVID-19 was created with this purpose, giving the possibility of detecting the virus concentration of sewage water in an easy and fast way, without the need of experienced personnel.

We designed Orvion Udetect® COVID-19 with the next characteristics for better use and help in the pandemic:

  • Affordable price
  • Fast results (<2 hours)
  • Mobile analysis- easy to carry even in hard-to-reach places.
  • Easy operation-no need for laboratory background staff.

We are happy to announce that Udetect® COVID-19 is currently being tested in two counties of Kenya: Kisumu, Nakuru, and nearby rural locations. This is possible thanks to the funding receiving by UN-Habitat and Aqua for All. Also, to the help and participation of Kenyan institutes and authorities; Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), representing Kenya from the health point of view; KIWASCO and NAWASSCO, operators of water treatment facilities in Kisumu and Nakundu and; Upande, a digital company founded in Kenya in charge of storing and analyzing the obtained data.

The effective monitoring campaign is currently in phase 1 where we aim to monitor the dynamics of the virus in 60 samples from a diverse set of locations. The storage and analysis of the information collected every day will help as a complementary tool to have a more accurate panorama of the pandemic situation in the area that is covered by the sewer that is monitored.

We will continue updating you about the project!
